CETRA - Centre for Transport Research of the University of Zilina

Centre of Excellence recognized by the European Commission

CETRA - Centre for Transport Research at University of Žilina in Žilina was one of two Centres in the Slovak Republic chosen by the European Commission in the year 2000 to support research infrastructures in the countries joining the EU.

The main objective of its establishment was to improve the research capability of the University and to put it at the service of the social nad economic needs of Slovakia, in conformity with the interest of the European Union as a whole. With the help of the experienced foreign specialists CETRA became a natural forum, where the subjects active in transport research can communicate and work together in order to find solutions for topical transport and logistic problems. Co-operation is maintained with the local economic-industrial and social environment. The aim is to use the scientific and research potential of the University to connect the academic environment with practical experience on the national and international level. Possible co-operation includes specialist supervision, testing, certification and other services for the industry, research on demand and project cooperation.

The international cooperation of CETRA was focused on the participation in the EU research and development framework programmes (FP), starting with the cooperation projects in FP5 and recently continuing within the HORIZON 2020. CETRA became an organisation hosting the National Contact Point for thematic programme of Transport (including aeronautics) of the FP7.

CETRA was also the organizer of the annual international symposium EURO-ZEL, focusing on research, development, economics and functioning in a field of railway transportation in Europe, mentioned in the Lyon declaration on the rail research innovation and necessity in the EU.

The activities of CETRA as an organization unit of the University of Zilina Rectorate have been ceased by the decision of the Academic senate on proposal of the Rector of the university to date 31.12.2020.
